  • What equipment is in the open gym?

    The Open Gym has four major areas of focus.

    Cardiovascular, which includes treadmills, rowers, elliptical trainers, and stationary bikes.

    The strength training area features kettlebells, battle ropes, medicine balls, free weights, TRX, and machines.

    Circuit of the Day - Circuit Training is considered by many fitness experts to be one of the most efficient and effective ways to train and improve physical health. On select days throughout the semester, a circuit of the day will be set up and consists of functional resistance training equipment and cardio stations alternating for a full body workout.  

    TABATA of the Day – HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) – 20 seconds of activity 10 seconds of rest for 8 stations.

  • How can I use the open gym?

    To use the Open Gym, you must be enrolled in one of the following classes.

    KFIT 61 – Personal Fitness Training

    KFIT 62 – Personal Fitness Technique

    KFIT 63 – Personal Fitness Health and Wellness

    KFIT 64 – Personal Fitness Program Design

    You can choose KFIT 61/62/63/64 which are self-paced, Open-Entry/Open-Exit classes that have a more flexible class schedule. Open Entry/Open Exit classes allow students to use the Open Gym during open times to achieve their fitness goals. Option in the fall and spring semester to take 1 or 1.5 unit. Participation hours required for 1 unit = 35 hours, 1.5 unit = 52.5 hours. Summer sections students can take .5 unit = 17.5 hours.

  • How can I use the open gym if I am faculty or staff or a community member (not a student)?

    SRJC is open to all people who are interested in taking advantage of the college curriculum and earning college credit.  Faculty, Staff, Managers, and community members are strongly encouraged to participate in the Open Gym but must be registered in an Open Gym class to utilize the facility.

  • Can I use the life open gym if I enroll in any kinesiology activity (KFIT) class?

    No, the only students allowed to use the Open Gym are those who are enrolled in KFIT 61, 62, 63, or 64.

  • Why do I have to take a class to use the open gym?

    The Open Gym is a Kinesiology classroom located on the Santa Rosa and Petaluma Campus.  The Personal Fitness courses and other Kinesiology classes offered in the Open Gym are part of the Kinesiology, Athletics, and Dance Department. Students learn important training principles, techniques, and wellness principles for a safe and effective workout. Kinesiology faculty who lead sessions all hold a minimum of a master’s degree in the discipline and can provide instruction for your training program along with learning appropriate training principles online through canvas to help guide you in achieving a safe and effective workout. Students receive academic credit for the successful completion of the personal fitness courses. 

  • What class do I take?

    The Open Gym offers the following courses which are a self-paced, open entry/open-exit courses and allow each enrolled student to use the Open Gym during the open hours to complete the required participation hours The goal of the Open Gym courses are for students to learn fitness concepts and skills related to the improvement of health and wellness.  After the successful completion of a KFIT 61 – Personal Fitness Training, students are encouraged to take the other courses in the Personal Fitness Program to develop additional fitness skills. With each class, students learn more skills and strategies, building their personal “fitness toolbox.”  You must complete KFIT 61 with a pass grade before enrolling any of the other classes.     KFIT 61 Personal Fitness Training

    This course is designed to provide students with fundamental exercise training guidelines and principles to improve personal fitness. This course offers flexibility to complete the participation requirement during any open gym hours at the assigned campus. A required orientation and fitness assessments will be completed as part of the course.

    KFIT 62Personal Fitness Technique

    This course is designed to provide fitness training instruction and experience using proper form and technique based on principles of biomechanics and personal fitness level. This course offers flexibility to complete the participation requirement during any open gym hours at the assigned campus. Fitness assessments will be completed as part of the course. (Prerequisite KFIT 61 – Personal Fitness Training)

    KFIT 63 – Personal Fitness Health and Wellness

    This course is designed to provide students with health and wellness principles and behavior modification strategies to enhance their personal fitness program. This course offers flexibility to complete the participation requirement during any open gym hours at the assigned campus. Fitness assessments will be completed as part of the course. (Prerequisite KFIT 61 – Personal Fitness Training)

    KFIT 64 – Personal Fitness Program Design

    This course is designed to provide instruction and experience in exercise program design based on personal fitness goals and assessments using proper protocols and exercise training guidelines. This course offers flexibility to complete participation requirement during any open gym hours at the assigned campus. Fitness assessments will be completed as part of this course. (Prerequisite KFIT 61 – Personal Fitness Training)

  • The courses in the open gym program are self-paced classes. What does that mean?

    Self-paced means you work through the course curriculum at your own pace online using CANVAS and during the open hours of the Open Gym.  While the class is self-paced, there are minimum participation requirements in order to maintain your course enrollment.  You must participate a minimum of 1 hour per week and complete the course curriculum at a consistent pace.

  • What is the attendance policy for the open gym program, self-paced classes?

    Like any Kinesiology activity class, consistent attendance and participation is required. All KFIT 61/62/63/64 students must complete a minimum of 1 hours per week in the open gym. Option in the fall and spring semester to take 1 or 1.5 unit. Participation hours required for 1 unit = 35 hours, 1.5 unit = 52.5 hours. Summer sections students can take .5 unit = 17.5 hours. Additional course content will be completed online on CANVAS.

  • Once I am enrolled in a personal fitness program self-paced class, could I ever be dropped from the class and lose my opportunity to use the personal open gym?

    Yes, students are dropped for non-attendance.  If you do not complete the required class attendance hours (1 hour per week), you will be dropped from the course.  Also, students who do not comply with the facility rules can be suspended or dropped from the course.

  • What do I need to do to get started with my self-paced personal fitness program?

    Register for KFIT 61 – Personal Fitness Training

    Students must have an official SRJC student ID card.  How to acquire your Student ID Card

    Complete the mandatory orientation and fitness testing within the first four weeks of the semester.  Your SRJC ID card is necessary to participate in the orientation and will be used to log your participation hours at the Open Gym and is REQUIRED to use the facility each time.

    Read the Open Gym Guidelines on CANVAS and submit proof of completion online

    Bring a workout towel for each workout.

  • Why do I need to do an orientation and online assignments? I already know how to exercise.

    The Personal Fitness Open Gym Program is a fitness education program consisting of a variety of courses designed to improve your knowledge of physical fitness, health, and wellness.  You will learn how to exercise properly following proper technique and guidelines established by the latest credible evidence-based research in the field.  Learning and applying these principles are the foundation for improving physical and mental well-being and for the quality and longevity of your life. Through the Personal Fitness Program, course curriculum, and its instructors, you can add new tools and knowledge to your fitness “toolbox.”
